Butters Land Trust, preserving the headwaters of Peralta Creek, operates alongside the neighborhood association, Friends of the Last Wild Canyon. This organization paved the way for the formation of the land trust by alerting neighbors to the potential loss of Butters Canyon and beginning the process of networking with interested organizations and agencies. Friends of the Last Wild Canyon participates in canyon preservation efforts and also addresses other neighborhood concerns.
Peralta Creek, flowing through the heart of Oakland, also includes in its watershed two historic groups:
One of the earliest urban land trusts, and the first in Oakland, was the Santa Rita Land Trust, begun over 25 years ago. The piece of land it sought to preserve is known as Jungle Hill.
Sitting near the banks of Peralta Creek on 34th Avenue lies the Peralta Hacienda Park, site of the earliest Spanish dwelling in Oakland.
Close in location, as well as in mission, the Friends of Sausal Creek works to preserve and improve the Sausal Creek watershed. Its vision includes an intact riparian corridor from the hills to the bay.
